SINGAPORE FASHION IS TAKING ON THE GLOBAL STAGE. HERE ARE THE BRANDS TO KNOW, LOVE AND BUY
For Ling Wu, which has been in the market for 13 years, it is also about adaptability to changing trends and a growing market. Ling Wu is known for its thoughtfully-designed leather and rattan bags, Goh Ling Ling, the founder and designer of Ling Wu says, “A good brand takes 10 years to mature. I feel like I am starting over once more but with more confidence.” For Goh, quality, a point of view, consistency, and good marketing, are what makes a brand successful. She works together with skilled artisans from Handep and The Ranee of Sarawak who support and empower indigenous communities in Kalimantan and Sarawak under fair trade practices, reinventing the art of weaving into more modern designs.
As for her customers, Goh feels that they are more willing to spend on products without a bias as to where they are produced compared to previously. “The Asian consumers are willing to spend more for locally designed products since online shopping exploded with Covid-19. Brands are now focusing more on their website and are able to control all sales and marketing themselves. It allows us to connect directly with our customers on a more personal level. With online shopping, consumers no longer mind not buying brands made in Europe or the U.S. They don’t spare a second’s thought about where this is made,” she shares.
